Education and awareness raising
The Commissioner plays a key role in educating and raising awareness of modern slavery in Australia. The Commissioner can deliver education and community awareness-raising initiatives to highlight modern slavery risks and how those risks may be addressed across sectors. The Commissioner can also promote educational materials and awareness-raising campaigns.
Supporting and engaging with people with lived experience
The Commissioner supports victims and survivors of modern slavery by providing information about government and non-government resources, programs, and services. Importantly, the Commissioner can engage with victims and survivors of modern slavery to ensure their voices inform the design of measures to address modern slavery.
Supporting Australian businesses
The Commissioner supports Australian businesses to address risks of modern slavery practices in their operations and supply chains, promoting transparency and compliance with Australia’s Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth).
Advocacy, research, and engaging with government
The Commissioner may engage with the Commonwealth, state, and territory governments to advocate for continuous improvement in policy and practice to enhance efforts to address modern slavery while also independently advocating for and being consulted on new initiatives to address modern slavery.
The Commissioner can also promote and harness research capabilities, to support evidence-based responses to modern slavery, and develop targeted guidance and training for high-risk industries and sectors.
